The "What's This?" Page (FAQ)
You probably have a bunch of questions about Million Dollar Tower Defense. So, below are the questions to some of the most common questions I've been asked so far. If you don't see your question answered, you can contact me here.
What is Million Dollar Tower Defense?
Million Dollar Tower Defense is an addictive flash game in the popular tower defense genre with the unique feature where people can buy and "own" the character sprites in the game. As a sprite "owner", you can choose an image and associated link which will appear in the game as a character and on this website. There are only 12,000 sprites available among all of the game levels. Buy as many as you want but once they're gone, they're gone. So make sure you reserve your sprites as soon as possible!

How does it work?
The process is simple. Each sprite is $10 and contains 10x10 pixels. You pick the sprites you want then pay to reserve them. Once your payment clears (processed by PayPal), you will then be able to upload the images for the sprites as well as a description and a URL it links to. After a short review process (to make sure everything is kosher), the images and links will go live - meaning that the game and this website will be updated with your sprite info, available for view by the millions of eyeballs on the internets.

Why should I buy your sprites?
By having your image and link in the game, they could be in front of potentially millions of people (that's a lot of eyeballs!) In general, flash games get distributed to many websites and can quickly amass a large audience. You can think of your sprite as a product placement in the game, except it won't cost you a huge wad of cash like it does in movies (plus you get a link back to your site). As the game spreads, your sprite image and link spreads with it, increasing its exposure. It's a chance for you to be part of internet flash game history, get your stuff seen by lots of people, contribute to a good cause (see below), and if everything works out, you might even be helping your future self! One move by you, multiple wins for everybody!

How long will my sprites last for?
Unlike traditional advertising in which your advertisement only lasts for a period of time, your sprites will last for as long as the game is around (as long as it's on one of the many servers across the world). Flash games get uploaded to new hosts all the time and can spread virally, where they can be seen by even more people. Even if this site goes down, your sprites can still be seen from other websites. However, I hope to keep this site up for as long as possible since I think it's a pretty cool idea.

How can you update all of the different copies of the game on the Internet?
Easy. By using MochiMedia's awesome Live Updates system. Their kick-ass technology handles all of the nitty gritty involved in updating the copies of the game on the internet so game developers can focus on the good stuff - making great games! These guys rock - you should check out their website and other services. Thanks Mochi!

If you're selling 12,000 sprites at $10 a pop, that's nowhere near $1 million. Why is it called Million Dollar Tower Defense?
Making a million dollars is cool and all but I think its even cooler if I can save the world a million or more dollars. In fact, that's what I'm working on - see the questions below to see why and how I'm working on accomplishing this. Also, "One Hundred Twenty Thousand Dollar Tower Defense" doesn't quite have the same ring to it.

Why are you doing this?
I'm a man on a mission. Sure, I love making flash games but I want to do something bigger to help the world through social entrepreneurship. In particular, I have a very strong interest in improving the healthcare system and reducing costs by optimizing healthcare education. I believe we can train our doctors, nurses, and other healthcare professionals better and faster by developing innovative healthcare education software which improve learning efficiency and efficacy. To top it all off, they can make the whole process more cost-effective.

I have the medical training and experience as well as the programming skills but most importantly, I have the vision of how to do accomplish this. In fact, as proof and example, I recently created SimCode ACLS™, a cutting-edge healthcare simulation training system that has been recognized at the national level. This revolutionary system not only helps keep our healthcare professionals better trained, it can save the US health care system $263 million annually. Imagine how much money could be saved if we had more systems like this!

To create and develop other projects such as SimCode ACLS&trade, I require more minerals (StarCraft joke for those who don't get it). Instead of going through traditional fund-raising routes, I thought I'd do something new and interesting by combining some entrepreneurship spirit and my flash-game making hobby. With your help, I'll be able to reach my goals, provide some good entertainment, and create a good advertising opportunity for those who need it, and make this world a better place for all.

What are you going to do with the money?
I'm not fond of the idea of relying on donations to keep projects going. What happens when the donations stop? And what happens to the people relying on the project? Exactly. So, I'd like to use the money to help create self-sustaining, self-growing projects to help make the world a better place. Basically, as a social entrepreneur, I plan to create businesses around each of the projects so they can take on a life of their own.

Why healthcare education?
As we all know, healthcare is really expensive and getting more so all the time. While people are debating about things like insurance, reimbursements, and the cost of medications, I think a really important part is being overlooked - healthcare education. Good doctors and nurses don't come cheap and for good reason. Just take a look at how much a medical education costs these days - and it keeps going up! I know cause I've been through it already.

It doesn't help that there is a shortage of good healthcare professionals either (or mal-distribution, depending on how you want to look at it). As the population in the world continues to grow, this problem is only going to get bigger. With the rapid advances in medical technology, there is more and more to learn. Without modernized tools, it'll take longer and longer to teach our health care professionals what they need to know. If we let this continue, the gap will become too large to close, no matter how much money is thrown at it.

I don't know what the answers are to the current healthcare problems, but I do know this education crisis has been brewing and I think I can do something to help stop or at least slow it down. SimCode ACLS™ is one of the answers and with your support, I hope to create many more.

How did you come up with this idea?
Ever since entering medical school, I've saw a great need for better educational tools and wanted to develop good healthcare education software. Fast forward several years later. While on call in the hospital one night, I had just finished seeing my last patient and was getting ready to hopefully get some rest.

Lying on the lumpy call room bed, I started thinking about how I could get the funds necessary to start software development. I had just recently learned of an awseom game called Desktop Tower Defense. I also got an e-mail that day about the Million Dollar Home Page. Click! Thanks to Paul Preece and Alex Tew for their respective awesomeness!
